U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross is the winner of New York Times columnist Gail Collins’s “Worst Trump Cabinet Member” unscientific poll.
Ross is known in the Lehigh Valley for his buyout group’s 2003 purchase of Bethlehem Steel Corp. W.L. Ross & Co. paid about $1.5 billion for Bethlehem Steel, which was in deep trouble at the time. The United Steelworkers supported the bid.
Bethlehem Steel became part of Ross’s International Steel Group, which was sold to Mittal Steel in 2005.
Collins’s unscientific poll noted Ross’s recent comments about furloughed federal workers going to food banks, and the 81-year-old’s alleged naps during cabinet meetings.
Ross, who combined several steel companies into International Steel before selling ISG to Mittal, based then in Rotterdam, now supports President Donald Trump’s tariffs on steel imports on the grounds of national security.
Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is a former “Worst Cabinet Member” winner.
