BETHLEHEM — Lehigh University and Standard Solar have completed a 3.1-megawatt solar field on the school’s Goodman Campus.
The solar site is part of Lehigh‘s commitment to reach “net carbon neutrality” by 2040, according to a joint press release. Carbon emissions have been linked to climate change.
The solar field will provide more than 100% of the Goodman Campus’s electricity needs and offset 8% of the university’s total use of electricity. The Goodman Campus is Lehigh’s athletic complex, near Route 78.
Some Bethlehem neighbors objected to the project when it was announced.
Owner/operator Standard Solar acquired the project from EDF Renewables. The university has a power-purchase agreement with Standard Solar.
“By investing in on-site renewable energy, we are not only reducing our emissions but also providing valuable learnings opportunities for our students, Lehigh President Jospeh H. Helble said.
Standard Solar is owned by Brookfield Renewable (NYSE:BEP) and is based in Rockville, Maryland. It owns and operates more than 350 megawatts of solar capacity in the U.S.
