Bethlehem City Council will meet Wednesday this week, pushing the meeting back one day because Tuesday is Election Day.
The agenda is fairly light, though nobody can predict how many people will show up to talk about non-agenda items, such as the Middle East, religion, military pay or whatever else strikes their fancy, while real city business waits.
There is a memo from Councilwoman Rachel Leon about switching discussion of a potential change in parking-permit rules. She suggests that the issue be switched to the Community Development Committee.
The specific issue does not appear to have a lot behind it. Some people who may be able to provide proof of residency may have their vehicle registered at another address, so they can’t get a parking permit.
That sounds like: STUDENTS. If the vehicle is registered at another address, so be it. Why make an exception? Maybe the car isn’t even registered in their name, maybe it is.
Perhaps there are people with multiple homes who choose to register elsewhere. Again, they made a choice and the city does not have to accommodate every possible permutation of permit parking problems.
Exceptions and complication weaken rules and weaken government.
Bethlehem City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Town Hall. The meeting will also be webcast.
