Big Lots, the discount retailer that is shutting down, will cut 505 jobs in Schuylkill County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor.
Columbus, Ohio-based Big Lots will make the cuts at a warehouse on Rausch Creek Road in Tremont, according to a WARN notice. WARN (worker adjustment and retraining) Act notices are required by the federal government for some mass layoffs and shutdowns.
The chain has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and plans to close all stores. A sale to a private equity firm fell through.
Here’s a note about the business’s final operations from the Big Lots website:
To Our Valued Business Partners,
We have made the difficult decision to begin conducting going out of business sales at all remaining Big Lots store locations.
As a result, we are no longer purchasing goods, except for those deemed essential to support the wind down of the business.
We are reaching out to providers of those essential goods and services directly, and are otherwise discontinuing any orders for goods and services.
As we conduct store closing sales, we are continuing to serve our customers in-store and online.
If you have provided goods or services to our stores and wish to file a proof of claim, proof of claim forms and other information about the claims process are available at https://cases.ra.kroll.com/BigLots.
Without question, this is a very difficult day for our organization, our customers, and important partners like you. However, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your partnership over the years – your support is truly appreciated.
