Orwigsburg Fire Department Starts Campaign to Raise $6 Million for New Station

— Jeff Ward, Lehigh Valley News Briefs

The Orwigsburg Fire Department is starting a campaign to raise $6 million for a new fire station.

The campaign will be discussed at a public event at noon on Friday, Jan. 24, at Friendship Fire Co. No. 1, 121 N. Liberty St. in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County.

The Orwigsburg Fire Department serves the borough and nearby municipalities. The plan is for a two-story station with a wash area to clean and decontaminate gear after calls to emergencies, reducing firefighters’ exposure to chemicals that can cause cancer.

The new building will also allow for expansion to accommodate the growing community.

The Orwigsburg department has applied for state and federal money and is working with an architect on a design for the new station. Land-develop plans are in the works, according to a statement from the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce.

For more information about the Jan. 24 event, see the chamber web page.
