Bethlehem Man Convicted of Attempted Carjacking, Lehigh County D.A. Holihan Says; He Faces Up to 42 Years in Prison

40-year-old Elon James of Bethlehem has been convicted of assault and attempted carjacking, according to Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan.

James faces as much as 42 years in prison upon sentencing, Holihan said in a statement.

The crime happened in the parking lots of a West Bethlehem restaurant in 2023, the D.A.’s statement said.

Jan. 17, 2025

District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan announced a Bethlehem man was convicted of all charges in a 2023 aggravated assault and attempted carjacking.

Elon James, DOB 8/24/1984, was convicted Jan. 16, 2025 after a two-day jury trial before Judge James T. Anthony. James was convicted of felony charges of Aggravated Assault, Criminal Attempt – Robbery of a Motor Vehicle and Criminal Attempt-Theft by Unlawful Taking as well as misdemeanor charges of Resisting Arrest and Simple Assault.

James’ bail was revoked and he was sent to Lehigh County Jail. His sentencing is scheduled for 1:30 pm. Feb. 26 before Judge Anthony. James faces a possible maximum sentence of 42 years in prison.

Around 8 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2023, James attempted to steal the car of a husband and wife as they were in the parking lot of a West Broad Street restaurant.

One victim was assaulted and he suffered serious injuries.

Bethlehem Police Officer Douglas Pascoe was in the area within minutes of the assault and found James, who ran from officers but was taken into custody nearby.

The investigation was assisted by the James B. Martin Regional Intelligence and Investigation Center.

The case was investigated by Bethlehem Police Officer Andrew Wirth and prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney David J. Mussel.
