The plan to put up 70 apartments on North New Street in Bethlehem is up for review this week.
The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission will discuss the plan twice, at a Tuesday committee meeting and then Thursday before the full commission.
The developer wants a zoning change to clear the way for development:
“The rezoning is intended to facilitate a future mixed-use land
development project, including 70 apartment units and commercial/retail space on the
ground floor,” according to the agenda for the LVPC’s Comprehensive Planning Committee meeting at noon Tuesday.
Here is the agenda and a link to the webcast of the meeting. Some city residents object to the plan, based on size and density.
The staff review of the project takes a favorable review of the plan:
“The proposal to rezone the subject properties aligns with FutureLV: The Regional Plan
by facilitating mixed-use infill opportunities in areas where additional development can
be accommodated. The project serves in increase attainable housing opportunities,
coordinate investments that support Centers and Corridors, and increase social and
economic access to daily needs for all people… “
The committee meeting will held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 25. The full commission will consider the plan for a zoning change at its meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27.
The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission is an advisory body in this case, issuing a recommendation. A final decision on zoning will be made by Bethlehem City Council.
