A Missed Opportunity in the Primary Election for Northampton County Executive

Not a good effort. How many people even bothered to open this, and why are there no pictures or other graphic elements?

I’m not taking sides right now in the Democrats’ primary for county executive.

County Controller Tara Zrinski and former Registrar of Elections Amy Cozze are seeking their party’s nomination to run in the fall against Republican Thomas Giovanni, who is unopposed in his party’s primary election. I added links to each name, you can read all about what they have to say about themselves.

Whoever wins in the fall will succeed incumbent County Executive Lamont G. McClure, who is running for the Lehigh Valley’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. That 7th District seat is held now by first-term Republican Ryan Mackenzie. The election isn’t until 2026.

No sides taken here in the executive primary, but campaign tactics are worth looking at. Yesterday, I got a mailer from the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. It was in a drab envelope, and on the front noted former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey’s endorsement of Cozze.

Cozze has worked for Northampton County and later for Casey. Casey is a big name in the party, and his father, the late Bob Casey, was governor of Pennsylvania and had ties to Northampton County. One of the last times I saw the governor was when he was attending a friend’s funeral in Bethlehem.

Yet the envelope touting the former senator’s endorsement is pale and washed out, and worse yet, has no pictures. Pictures of Casey and Cozze would garner some attention.

The sad truth is, those “WE BUY HOUSES” postcards and mailings promoting new dentists are more visually interesting.

Unlike, I suspect, a lot of people, I opened it. I expected something bright and attention-getting.

No. What is inside also fails the eye test. A four-paragraph letter that most people won’t read. Some items in bold. Nothing bright or interesting.

I’ve seen title searches that are more interesting.

Somebody spent a lot of money on this. They wasted it.

We live in an iPhone world, like it or not. Grab attention now, or it’s lost.
