Northampton County Council will hold a public hearing tonight on buying 43 acres of land in Stockertown. That land is designated to be preserved as open space.
Saving green space is a popular issue. Stockertown and a few other little towns, such as Bath, have borne the brunt of lots of truck traffic from warehouses while not gaining much in their tax base.
County Executive Lamont G. McClure contends that the best way to fend off the construction of more warehouses is to own public land. Northampton County has enough warehouses, according to McClure, although the big companies that build warehouses might disagree.
Council will also consider a motion to waive the appraisal requirement for acquisition of land for the Bushkill Creek Greenway, and review a resolution for construction agreement for the Plainfield Township Two Rivers Trail Gap.
Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, on the third floor of the government center in Easton. Here is the agenda; note, agendas are subject to change.
At 5 p.m., Council’s Energy, Environment and Land Use Committee will meet. It will discuss the Bushkill Greenway acquisition and the Two Rivers Trail agreement.
Both meetings are open to the public and will be broadcast on the county’s YouTube channel.
