United Natural Foods plans to cut more than 700 jobs in North Whitehall Township, according to a WARN Notice from the State of Pennsylvania.

Cuts at the 4255 East Independence Drive warehouse in the Schnecksville area of the township will begin Aug. 12 and end Oct. 18, according to the notice. The statement from the state Department of Labor and Industry says 716 jobs will be cut.

The Rhode Island-based company, also known as UNFI, describes the North Whitehall location as its Allentown Distribution Center. The building is between Route 476 and Route 309.

UNFI said today in its third-quarter earnings report that it is “exiting a customer contract and optimizing the Company’s distribution network in the Northeast.”

The company is also dealing with a cyberattack that disrupted some deliveries.

Shares in United Natural Foods (NYSE:UNFI) fell $2.64 today to $23.30.

United Foods has an agreement to serve Amazon.com’s Whole Foods unit through 2032.

WARN Notices are required by federal law to advise employees and communities of certain types of job cuts.

In some cases, the notices are issued when an organization switches contracts, such as when a college hires a new food-service company. In those instances, jobs are often kept but the paycheck comes from a new outfit.
