Bernie Berg of Easton, a nurse, former priest, U.S. Navy veteran and sometime political candidate, has died at age 89, according to an obituary published in the Allentown Morning Call.
Berg was known for his unapologetic activism against war and military spending, and for the public good, supporting education and healthcare. He died June 4, the obituary says.
I knew him as a demonstrator and most of all, as a prolific writer of letters to the editors of local newspapers, back when there three, and then two, papers published daily. I didn’t always agree with what he wrote — a lot of people didn’t — but he wrote with style and humor.
I knew a lot about his opinions, but not his background. The obituary notes his varied career: military, religion, healthcare, and activism.
When somebody tells me they are an “activist,” sometimes that doesn’t mean much. With Bernie Berg, it did. Plus he was a nurse, one of the finest professions there is.
It is easy to dismiss activists who show up for cameras and only at some events, but Bernie Berg won respect, sometimes grudging, even from opponents because of his sheer persistence.
For more on his life, please see the Morning Call obituary. I can’t find the original source material, but it’s a solid farewell to Bernie Berg.
