Dr. Joseph Warren never set foot in what became Warren County, New Jersey, but now his portrait hangs in his namesake county’s administration building.

Warren was an early advocate for breaking free from Great Britain, according to a county statement. When the county was founded in 1825, splitting off from Sussex County, local leaders chose to honor the patriot on the 50th anniversary of his death.

Warren was born in Massachusetts in 1741. He sent Paul Revere and William Dawes on their famous ride, according to the biography provided by the county. He was commissioned as a major general in the militia and was killed in 1775 when British troops stormed Breed’s Hill. Warren was 34.

Now, 14 states have a Warren County in honor of the physician and patriot. Warren is the subject of books, including Founding Martyr: The Life and Death of Dr. Joseph Warren, the American Revolution’s Lost Hero.

The Warren County, New Jersey, commissioners unveiled Warren’s portrait Tuesday at the Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Building. Belvidere resident Jeff Echevarria created the work.
