Penn State to Shut Public Station Serving Central Pennsylvania, WPSU Reports

Sept. 17, 2025

— Jeff Ward, Lehigh Valley News Briefs

Penn State is shutting down its WPSU public television station by the end of June 2026.

The decision to close comes after the federal government ended funding to public television.

Penn State has been giving WPSU about $3.4 million per year, according to a story on the station’s website, link below. That, the story said, was not sustainable.

A plan to turn the station over to WHYY in Philadelphia was turned down by a Penn State board committee, WPSU reported.

WPSU TV and WPSU FM will close by June 30, 2026.

The Lehigh Valley’s PBS 39 television station has also lost funding but it has about $78 million invested to cover large losses in recent years.

PBS 39 also operates WLVR FM, Lehigh University’s radio station.
