Jefferson Health, which operates locally under the Lehigh Valley Health Network brand, says it will use artificial intelligence “to reclaim more than 10 million hours of clinician time by 2028.”
Artificial Intelligence will be used to reduce administrative work, according to the Jefferson statement.
” … we are returning time to our clinicians to be with patients,” according to a statement from Baligh Yehia, M.D. and president of Jefferson Health.
The press releases does not mention any impact on jobs from automating the documentation process.
Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health reported a big operating loss in fiscal 2025, and a Philadelphia Business Journal story indicated layoffs may be on the way.
Jefferson took over Lehigh Valley Health Network on Aug. 1, 2024.
Here is the statement:
Philadelphia, PA — September 18, 2025 — Jefferson Health announced a system-wide artificial intelligence (AI) strategy designed to reclaim more than 10 million hours of clinician time by 2028.
“This is not just a technology strategy,” said Baligh Yehia, MD, MPP, MSc, FACP, President of Jefferson Health. “It’s a bold commitment to reimagine healthcare—where innovation amplifies compassion, and AI helps us deliver safer, smarter and more accessible care for patients.”
By cutting the administrative burden for more than 23,000 clinicians, Jefferson Health will free up the equivalent of two years, so clinicians can focus on what matters most: caring for patients and families. “By using AI to reduce paperwork and streamline care, we are returning time to our clinicians to be with patients and removing barriers so that high-quality care is within reach for every community we serve,” Yehia added.
Rather than chasing automation for its own sake, Jefferson Health is embracing AI as a tool for augmentation—enhancing the human experience across every touchpoint in care delivery. The strategy includes:
- Delivering Human-Centered Experiences at Scale – Personalizing every clinical interaction, enhancing face-to-face time and reducing wait times.
- Accelerating Insight to Action – Using AI to predict needs, reduce risks and improve outcomes.
- Building Trust Through Transparency – Auditing all AI models for bias, co-design solutions with key stakeholders and ensuring human oversight in AI deployment.
This strategy builds on Jefferson’s AI Center for Excellence, established in 2022. Over the last several years, interdisciplinary leaders have been evaluating the evolving landscape, including new internal and external opportunities, and focusing on AI adoption that will support key outcomes.
Jefferson has already launched ambient listening technology for physicians and advanced practice clinicians and has a focused team working toward integration into nursing. By automating documentation, the health system is cutting administrative noise and giving back to the clinical teams what matters most: time for meaningful patient connection and trusted care.
Following its strategic combination with Lehigh Valley Health Network in August 2024, Jefferson Health launched an enterprise-wide AI strategy under the leadership of a unified AI Steering Committee. This initiative marks a bold step toward transforming care delivery with nearly 120 AI solutions already identified across clinical, operational and administrative domains. The committee ensures robust governance, ethical oversight, and alignment with Jefferson’s mission to deliver exceptional, patient-centered care through responsible innovation.
