Thermo Fisher Scientific, a maker of medical and scientific devices, is working with Nvidia to bring artificial intelligence into Thermo’s laboratories.
” The effort will leverage the NVIDIA Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform and Thermo Fisher Scientific solutions to progressively increase the automation, accuracy and speed of laboratories,” according to a Thermo Fisher statement.
Thermo Fisher (NYSE:TMO) is based in Waltham, Massachusetts, and has operations in the Lehigh Valley. Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) is the dominant designer of computer chips used to support Artificial Intelligence.
The use of AI in any field raises concerns about employment.
The Thermo Fisher statement suggests that some tasks carried out manually will be done by AI.
“In most laboratories today, scientists still perform many tasks manually—from designing experiments and setting up instrumentation to preparing samples, running instruments, and interpreting results. The collaboration between Thermo Fisher and NVIDIA will meaningfully contribute to modernizing these processes; powering instruments with better AI capabilities, connecting laboratories and data to AI software, and augmenting scientists’ capabilities to design, perform and analyze data from their experiments,” according to the press release.
Shares of Thermo Fisher traded at $604.32 at 1:58 p.m. Monday. Shares of Nvidia were trading at $184.56. Nvidia’s market capitalization is about $4.5 trillion, making it the largest company in the world by that measure.
Disclosure: I own shares in Nvidia. I used to own Thermo Fisher and though it’s shown some life recently, the stock was a dog for a long long time.
