The Lafayette College men’s basketball team led Colgate University at halftime on Saturday, but found a way to lose to the now regular-season champion Raiders, 76-70.
Lafayette squandered its 31-26 halftime lead at home by giving up 50 points to Colgate in the second half. Colgate had 17 second-chance points to 6 for Lafayette, and the Raiders’ rebounding edge was 38-30.
Lafayette was in the game until the final minute, but couldn’t muster the defense to win. Guard Justin Jaworski led the Leopards with 21 points. No player got into double figures in rebounds. Freshman center Sean Good started, played three minutes and recorded one block.
Lafayette, No. 7 in the Patriot League, will face Holy Cross, No. 10, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Kirby Sports Center in a league tournament play-in game. Lafayette and the Crusaders split their two regular-season games.
The Leopards finished the year 10-19, 7-11 in the Patriot League, but with only nine Division 1 wins.
Colgate, which years ago was an afterthought in the league, won the regular-season crown. The Raiders are 21-10, 13-5 in the league.
