Beware Of Deed and Title Fraud: State Association of Realtors

Not even houses are safe from thieves, so they’re not “safe as houses.”

June 26, 2025

Beware of deed and title fraud, the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors warns.

This silent crime involving forged signatures and fake documents is an attempt to steal property. The crime is prevalent in the Northeast U.S.

Criminals may try to sell or rent property they don’t own, or take out a mortgage against somebody else’s home.

From the association:

Title and deed fraud typically involves forged signatures and fraudulent documents being recorded to unlawfully transfer ownership. Victims may not realize they’ve been targeted until they receive unfamiliar tax notices, bills for mortgages they didn’t sign, or discover someone else trying to sell or rent out their property.”
