Pennsylvania’s Public Utilities Commission will investigate PPL’s requested rate increase, the PUC said today.

The commission voted 5-0 today to look into the increase, which would boost PPL Electric Utilities’ annual revenue by $356.3 million. The electric utilities unit is part of PPL Corp.

PPL requested the increase in September.

The PUC said in its statement that the monthly bill for a residential customer using 918 kilowatt hours per month would go up more than $12, to $189.40 under $177.01.

“Based on today’s action by the Commission, the rate increase request is now suspended for up to seven months from the proposed effective date of Dec. 1, 2025,” according to the PUC.

Shares of PPL Corp. (NYSE:PPL) traded at $37.59 at 12:20 p.m.

— Disclosure: I own PPL stock. I still don’t want my bill to go up.

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to suspend and investigate a proposed rate increase by PPL Electric Utilities Corporation (PPL).  PPL provides services to nearly 1.5 million customers in 29 counties in central and eastern Pennsylvania.

The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate PPL’s proposed rate increase, which was filed on Sept. 30, 2025, and seeks an annual increase in revenues of $356.3 million (33.4%).  As proposed, the total monthly bill for a residential customer using 918 kWh per month would increase from $177.01 to $189.40 (7%).

Based on today’s action by the Commission, the rate increase request is now suspended for up to seven months from the proposed effective date of Dec. 1, 2025, and will be assigned to the PUC’s Office of Administrative Law Judge (OALJ) for investigation and recommended decisions.

The OALJ’s investigation will include public input hearings to gather testimony from concerned consumers and interested stakeholders.  Dates, times and locations for those hearings will be detailed in future PUC press releases.  More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.

A final PUC decision on PPL’s rate increase request is due by July 1, 2026.

Why does PPL want a rate increase? Is it for an infrastructure upgrade?

Yes. PPL says it has to invest in maintaining and improving its power delivery.
The PUC review is no surprise, they will weigh the costs versus benefits.
I expect an increase to go through. Maybe not the entire amount but something will happen.
