Shares of Six Flags Entertainment, the owner of Dorney Park, touched a 52-week low of $14.80 today.
The shares (NYSE:FUN) finished Tuesday at $15.44, less than a third of the high of $49.77 recorded in the last 52 weeks.
The Charlotte, North Carolina-based amusement park company reported a big loss on Friday and company officials said it’s considering selling “underperforming” parks.
Six Flags has closed parks and sold property earlier. It’s in the amusement park business, but it’s also in the real estate business.
No specific mention was made Friday of Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom in South Whitehall Township.
Six Flags and Cedar Fair, Dorney’s previous owner, combined as of July 1, 2024, and the new company had high hopes. The deal’s results do not match expectations.
“We are excited to unite the Cedar Fair and Six Flags teams to capitalize on the tremendous growth opportunities and operational efficiencies of our more extensive entertainment portfolio,” Executive Chairman of the Board Selim Bassoul said in a company statement that day.
The new Six Flags promised investment in the parks. So far, the deal hasn’t worked out for shareholders.
On Aug. 6, 2025, the company said Chief Executive Richard Zimmerman would leave by the end of this year. Six Flags also reported earnings, and said weather had hurt attendance.
“Six Flags’ second quarter results were adversely affected by unfavorable weather across most of the Company’s key markets, including prolonged periods of rain, extreme temperatures, and severe storms,” according to the earnings statement.
The third-quarter report last week didn’t help.
“Our efforts to stimulate demand did not achieve the desired returns,” Zimmerman said in the financial report. He also said the company would focus its investment where it can get the most return.
During a conference call, Zimmerman said the results did not meet company expectations, and Chief Financial Officer Brian Witherow said “underperforming parks” may be sold. Six Flags has about $5 billion in debt.
Zimmerman also noted investor JANA Partners interest in the company. National Football League player Travis Kelce, a tight end with the Kansas City Chiefs, is a fan of the parks and part of the JANA team.
Whatever Six Flags’ leadership said last week didn’t reassure the markets. The closing price of the stock was $18.39 on Thursday and has fallen nearly $3 since.
Cedar Fair acquired Dorney Park in 1992, in an entertaining transaction that involved a squabble among Lehigh County’s elected officials. More on that later.
