Lafayette College running back Kente Edwards has transferred to Coastal Carolina, according to Edwards’ post on Instagram.
After the 2025 season, Edwards was named to the All-Patriot League First Team. He ran for 1,454 yards and scored 20 touchdowns, a Lafayette record for a single season.
This is the second straight year that Lafayette has lost a top running back. Jamar Curtis entered the transfer portal and went to Sacramento State University after the 2024 season.
Lafayette plays in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), so Edwards will be stepping up a level when he takes the field for Coastal Carolina.
The school in Conway, South Carolina, plays in the Sun Belt Conference, a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) league. FBS teams are eligible for bowls, but the leagues are a step below the Bowl Championship Subdivision (BCS) teams such as Alabama, Ohio State and USC.
Edwards played three seasons at Lafayette, so based on normal standards (which don’t exist anymore) he will have one season at his new school. His transfer was noted earlier on a Lafayette fan chat board.
Coastal Carolina has not yet listed Edwards on its roster. The school’s teams are called The Chanticleers, an archaic word for rooster. The school has an NIL (name, identity and likeness) collective, which raises money to pay athletes for promoting businesses.
Some Patriot League fans are concerned that top players will depart after a year or two for money from bigger schools. Lafayette lost Sean Kinney, a center who played for Nazareth Area High School,
The Chanticleers’ football opponents this fall include West Virginia of the Big 12, Fordham from the Patriot League along with league opponents such as James Madison and Marshall.
Edwards is a graduate of North Hunterdon High School in Hunterdon County, N.J.
