OraSure Technologies reported a second-quarter adjusted loss today of $13.8 million, or 20 cents per share.

Revenue in the quarter ended June 30 reached $30.6 million, topping the company’s forecast of $27 million to $30 million. Total revenue was down about 2% from the year-ago second quarter.

The Bethlehem-based maker of home-diagnostic tools and specimen-collection devices has been losing money for years. The stock has been a laggard since the flow of federal money stopped after the Covid-19 pandemic.

OraSure (NASDAQ:OSUR) is also using a lot of cash. Its cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter were $160.6 million, down from $234.6 million a year ago.

The closing price today was $4.15. In the last 52 weeks, the shares have traded as low as $2.08 and as high as $4.58.

The adjusted earnings exclude items the company considers to be one-time or unusual. On a Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) basis, OraSure made a profit of 9 cents per share in the second quarter.

Chief Executive Carrie Eglinton Manner has set a goal of the company reaching patients at home with self-diagnostic kits.

During a conference call today, she said the second-quarter results were part of the company’s “transformation” and talked about “sustainable growth” and “shareholder value.” Still, there was a little less jargon than in some earlier calls.

Eglinton Manner said the second quarter was a step back to growth. When?

The company pulled for now a product from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review, she said today, although the company did receive FDA emergency-use authorization for an Ebola test in July. In June, OraSure said the FDA approved the use of the Colli-Pee at-home urine-collection kit for sexually transmitted infections,

On the plus side, she said the company continues to bring work back to its Pennsylvania operations. In addition to its South Bethlehem headquarters, OraSure has a factory in Bethlehem Township, along with operations in Canada, the United Kingdom and North Carolina.

Chief Financial Officer Kenneth McGrath said non-GAAP gross margin in the second quarter of 2026 was 44.2%, up from 43.2% in the year-ago quarter. The company ended the quarter with no debt.

OraSure forecast third-quarter revenue today of $29.5 million to $32.5 million.

What is now OraSure has its roots in SolarCare (founded in 1988), which made sunscreen towelettes. The company’s products include InteliSwab, a test for Covid, and OraQuick, which detects HIV.
