Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School will make its pitch for renewal on Monday, and the Bethlehem Area School District board of directors will also hear an update on construction at the new Fountain Hill Elementary School.
Two board committees will meet Monday evening.
The charter school, off Schoenersville Road in the Lehigh County side of Bethlehem, was founded in 2002 and as of Sept. 1 had 1,949 students, according to its 29-screen presentation.
Charter schools are publicly funded but privately operated. Supporters say they provide more educational options, while critics say the schools take money from districts and aren’t as accountable as public schools.
The chief executive of Lehigh Valley Academy made $239,046 in the school’s last fiscal year.
The host public districts periodically vote on renewing charters. The LVA presentation will be made during the Curriculum Committee meeting. The meetings will start at 6 p.m. at the BASD education building, 1516 Sycamore St.
The board’s Facilities Committee will hear the update on the Fountain Hill Elementary School construction.
