— Jeff Ward, Lehigh Valley News Briefs
PPL Corp. will post third-quarter results tomorrow morning and then hold a conference call that may reveal the energy company’s progress in working with data-center developers.
The Allentown-based utility is expected to report third-quarter earnings per share of 53 cents, according to a survey of five Wall Street analysts by Zacks Investment Research.
Some PPL customers are concerned about data centers’ demand for energy and water, with the potential to push up prices.
PPL Electric Utilities, the business unit that delivers electricity to Lehigh Valley customers, says it has a plan to protect residential and small-business customers.
When PPL reported second-quarter earnings in August, Chief Executive Vincent Sorgi said he didn’t expect Pennsylvania to put a moratorium on data-center development, but he acknowledged that the big-box buildings full of computer equipment can “overwhelm these local communities.”
At the same time, the company’s statement that day said “Pennsylvania is uniquely positioned to lead data center expansion in the U.S.” That was in a presentation made during a conference call after the company reported $247 million in adjusted second-quarter net income.
Sorgi also said that other customers will be protected from higher rates, even as “hyperscalers” consume immense amounts of electricity for e-commerce, Artificial Intelligence and other uses.
PPL and Blackstone are in a joint venture to develop power-generation sources for data centers and other big energy users. That announcement was made at an event featuring Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, and U.S. Sen. David McCormick, a Republican.
PPL reports financial results before the opening of regular trading. The conference call will be held at 11 a.m.
Shares in the energy company (NYSE:PPL) rose 15 cents today to $35.87.
Disclosure: I own shares of PPL.
