PPL Corp. reported third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of 54 cents today, topping Wall Street’s estimates.

Shares of the company rose in early trading.

The Allentown-based utility was expected to report 53 cents per share, according to the consensus of industry analysts compiled by Zacks Investment Research.

Chief Executive Vincent Sorgi said in the earnings release that the company’s Invitium Energy joint venture will provide about two gigawatts of generation capacity to serve a data center in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

There will be more to come.

“This continued data center interest in Pennsylvania further supports new generation opportunities at Invitium Energy,” PPL said in its statement.

PPL will hold a conference call at 11 a.m. to discuss the quarter. During the call after second-quarter earnings were reported in August, Sorgi said he doesn’t expect Pennsylvania to place a moratorium on data centers. Such a moratorium has been suggested to give municipalities time to update zoning codes before centers are built.

PPL has been in talks with data-center developers and other so-called hyperscalers, huge consumers of electricity that serve e-commerce and other high-tech industries. Invitium Energy is PPL’s multi-billion-dollar venture with Blackstone to build generation capacity to meet growing demand.

The closing share price of PPL (NYSE:PPL) on Thursday was $36.00.
