California’s Great America has one year of fun left.
Six Flags, owner of Dorney Park, will close the San Francisco Bay-area park after the 2027 season.
California’s Great America is on land that was sold to warehouse developer Prologis and leased back to the amusement park company. Six Flags has chosen not to extend the lease.
“The 2027 Farewell Season will begin in March and conclude on Labor Day, Sept. 6, 2027. As previously announced in 2022, the park’s land lease expires in June 2028 and the company opted not to extend,” according to a Six Flags press release.
Six Flags has struggled since the 2024 merger of the former Six Flags with Cedar Fair, then owner of Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom in South Whitehall Township.
The company had about $4.9 billion of long-term debt as of Sept. 27. In the past year, seven parks have been sold and one was closed.
California’s Great America opened in 1976.
Shares of Six Flags (NYSE:FUN) have fallen as low as $6.60 in the last few weeks before rebounding a bit. The closing price today was $10.00, still a fraction of the price after the 2024 combination.
Prologis (NYSE:PLD) operates about 30 million square feet of warehouse space in the Lehigh Valley.
