PennDot to Hold Local Meeting Tuesday About Improvements for the Route 191, 22 Intersection; Will Brodhead Road Be Changed?

The 191/22 intersection is among the worst in the Lehigh Valley.

One of the Lehigh Valley’s worst intersections will be the focus of an open house on Tuesday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will discuss proposed improvements at the Route 22 / Route 191 intersection from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Bethlehem Township municipal building, 4225 Easton Ave.

Bethlehem Township residents know something about bad intersections, with the Farmersville Road/Freemansburg Avenue double-T crossing also among the worst in the region. Township residents might have nominations for other dangerous crossings too, and with development along Freemansburg and Easton avenues, more logjams are to come.

Among the issues up for discussion: extending entrance and exit ramps; widening the Route 22 shoulder; adding second through-lanes on Route 191; replacing bridges; adding sidewalk on both sides of 191 (as an avid walker, I like that one); adding turn lanes, and “realigning Brodhead Road.”

That last one could be big. I avoid Brodhead Road when possible after getting stuck behind trucks at the light where it meets Route 191. Brodhead is a backroad that has turned into an industrial artery.

The overflow to Christian Spring Road, which is barely wide enough for two cars in spots, is also a result of the 191/22 issue. Deliver trucks use the road and drivers of all sorts of vehicles ignore the turning restriction where Christian Spring runs into Linden Street/Route 191. See note below before complaining about terminology.

Here is a link to information about the intersection and the Tuesday open house, again, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the township government building.

Route 191 is sometimes referred to as Linden Street or Nazareth Pike, depending on the location. In my newspaper days, decades ago, an old coot from Bethlehem used to call us whenever the Route 191 identification was used incorrectly.

Don’t call me. I am now that old coot, but I don’t care about the technicality, we all know what it is.
