Amazon.com promises to be good.
In a statement posted yesterday, Matt Garman, chief executive of Amazon’s web services business, disputes claims that data centers use too much water, that they’re pushing up electricity prices and they cause a lot of pollution.
He also points to economic benefits to the centers, and suggests that opponents of the centers may be unwitting tools of bad people abroad.
Tell that to people who don’t want a center built down the street.
On the other hand, more data centers will be built regardless of what some politicians claim.
Pennsylvania’s own Public Utility Commission has said “time is of the essence” in dealing with the challenge of electricity demand by data centers.
Disclosure: I own shares in Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). The company has a market value of $2.7 trillion. I do not.
Here’s Garman’s statement on behalf of the company. It’s very readable, not at all technical.
