Lower Saucon Township wants to buy a drone to help its police department.
The township Council will vote Wednesday on applying for a Northampton County grant to help pay for a “police unmanned aerial device.”
The township Police Department provides around-the-clock coverage of about 24 square miles (the City of Bethlehem is smaller at 19 square miles) with 117 miles of township and state roads. Lower Saucon has about 11,000 residents.
A drone would “aid in search and rescue efforts, suspect search and tracking, as well as tactical deployment,” according to a resolution on the council agenda.
Lower Saucon will pay up to $4,509 and seek a Northampton County grant of up to $9,017 to buy the drone.
Also Wednesday, the township will receive extensions to review a proposal by St. Luke’s University Health Network for an office building at 1865 Leithsville Road, and more time to consider the Lower Saucon Fire Rescue plan for construction at its Wassergass Road site.
Lower Saucon Township Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Town Hall, 3700 Old Philadelphia Pike. Agenda items are subject to change. Check the township website closer to the meeting date.
